So this distribution and power transformer design software saves time, energy and revenue. A must key tool for transformer design and training professionals and engineering students.
Factors controlling and affecting the design of a transformer Principle of operation of a transformer "A transformer is a static machine which works on the principle of mutual induction. When a coil is placed in the vicinity of an other coil, an emf if generated in the coil with the change in rate of magnetic flux associated around the other coil." So all the transformer whether a HT transformer, a distribution transformer, power transformer, stepup transformer, stepdown transformer, auto transformer, furnance transformer, induction transformer, rectifier transformer, power supply transformer, auxillary transformer, control transformer, audio transformer, frequency transformer, EHT transformer, oil filled transformer, dry type transformer, current transformer, potential transformer, copper transformer, aluminium transformer, off load transformer and on load transformer all work upon the above said principle of operation of a transformer. The magnetizing core is a very essential part of a transformer. To get the preliminary dimensions of transformer core we first need to know the specifications of a transformer like - type of transformer (a number of transformer types are mentioned above), rating of transformer in KVA, number of phases of transformer, rated voltage for primary winding of transformer and secondary winding of transformer, the operating frequency of transformer, the vector group of transformer, short circuit impedence of transformer, no load losses of transformer, load losses of transformer, tapping requirements for transformer. The dimensions of the core of transformer are closely connected with the dimensions of other transformer parts like winding of transformer. The emf per turn of a transformer is one of the most important values defining not only the dimensions of a transformer, but the number of transformer winding turns too. This also influences the value of transformer short circuit impedence, the transformer weight and transformer losses etc.,. The transformer design flux density in a transformer leg depends upon the grade of CRGO core laminations that would be used in the transformer manufacture. For transformer core grades M2 to M6, the transformer design flux density is taken between 1.5 Tesla to 1.7 Tesla. Proper cooling methods must be adopted in higher rating distribution and power transformer. In HT transformer and EHT transformer, the insulation type and value should be calculated and choosen carefully. Total losses in a transformer are no load losses and load losses. As transformer is a static machine so no windage and frictional losses occure in a transformer. The temperature rise in a transformer is due to load conditions of transformer, surrounding environment of transformer, purity and cleaniness of transformer oil. The cooling surface of transformer tank must be calculated care fully to avoid over heating of transformer windings and transformer oil resulting in rise in transformer body temperature. The operational frequency of transformer also affects the temperature variations in transformer. So the transformer must be operated close to its designed frequency. The transformer temperature can also be reduced by care fully designing the transformer LT winding as to use many parallel insulated conductors instead of a single solid conductor. The HT winding transformer coils and LT winding transformer coils should have oil ducts in between layers to transfer heat generated in the HT winding transformer coils and LT winding transformer coils. The core laminations of a transformer are varnished and insulated from each other to reduce eddy current loss in a transformer. This also attributes in reduction of transformer temperature. The no. of transformer radiators are also calculated carefully. Forced air is also used to lower down the transformer temperature in case of large capacity power transformer. A transformer is provided with a temperature gause to measure and indicate the transformer oil temperature. In case of an abnormal condition a transformer protection relay called buchloze relay is provided in between the transformer tank and transformer conservator. All above design calculations are done by the transformer design software which also takes in consideration the tolerances, makes validations if some transformer design part goes wrong.

AC Electric Motor Design - Software
Softbit presents an easy way to design LT, 3 ph, TEFC, squirrel cage ac electric motors with the help of "AC Electric Motor Design Software". You just need to enter a few preliminary inputs and click a button. What you get is an output "Design Sheet" containing more than 100 output parameters required to build an ac squirrel cage electric motor. You can start to design from a small fractional horse power ac electric motor to a 50 hp ac electric motor using this design software. Higher hp modules are also available on request. You have the options to change any of the values from output design data to match your specifications and need. With the change in any of these values, the remaining parameters change automatically, without affecting the output design and performance of the motor.
What you can Change
You can change any parameter from the design data sheet like no. of slots, type of cage, material of cage conductor (Al or Cu), length of stator, bore of stator, core type / material, rotor dimensions, stator length, shaft diameter, shaft length, supply voltage etc.,. to get a better and most suited design for your requirement. Accordingly motor winding data will also change.
Why to change the output parameter
What ever results you get through this design software are as per calculations done using the formulae used to design a squirrel cage ac electric induction motor. Now suppose you get a rotor diameter as X and rotor length as Y but the job and place do not permit you to use these dimesions of rotor or say motor then you just change the value of either X or Y to best suit your requirement and all the related output parameters will change automatically. So you can customize the design as per yours , your client's or job's requirement.
Values you need to enter at the start
When you start designing a squirrel cage ac electric motor, certain preliminary values are required to be fed to the software to give the out put parameters. So you need to enter - capacity of motor in hp / kw, poles, supply voltage, rpm, frequency and certain more that the software will ask you at the time of start.

Factors affecting the Design of an ac electric induction motor
"An electric motor converts electrical energy into rotating mechanical energy or an electric motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into rotating mechanical energy. AC electric motor works on the principle of electro - magnetic induction".
Design of an ac electric motor is directly affected by the length of the air gap. Ampere Conductors value also affects the design of an ac electric motor. The value of average flux density over the air gap of an ac electric motor also affects the design of an ac electric motor. The size or dimensions of an ac electric motor depend upon the speed of an ac electric motor. It can also be said that the volume of active parts of an ac electric motor varies inversely as the speed of an ac electric motor. The value of output co-efficient is directly responsible for the dimensions of an ac electric motor. In other words the volume of active parts of an ac electric motor is inversely proportional to the value of output co-efficient of the ac electric motor. The total flux around the armature (or stator of an ac electric motor) periphery at the air gap is called the total magnetic loading. While total electric loading is the total number of ampere conductors around the armature (or stator of an ac electric motor) periphery. Since the output coefficient of an ac electric motor is proportional to the product of specific magnetic and specific electric loading of an ac electric motor, we conclude that the size and hence the cost of ac electric motor decreases if increased values of specific magnetic and electric loading are used. The flux density in iron parts of an ac electric motor is directly proportional to the average flug density in the air gap of the ac electric motor. In a well designed ac electric motor the maxmium density occurs in the teeth of the ac electric motor and therefore let us relate the flux density in the teeth with flux density in the air gap of ac electric motor. Th magnetising current of an ac electric motor is directly proportional to the mmf required to force the flux through the air gap and the parts of the ac electric motor. The mmf required for the air gap of an ac electric motor is directly proportional to the gap flux density i.e. the specific magnetic loading of an ac electric motor. The consideration of magnetising current is very important in ac electric induction motor(s) as an increased value of magnetising current means of a low operating power factor of ac electric motor. Therefore specific magnetic loading in the case of ac electric induction motor(s) is lower than that in dc electric motor(s). The core loss in any part of the magnetic circuit of an ac electric motor is directly proportional to the flux density for which the ac electric motor is going to be designed. Thus a large value of specific magnetic loading in an ac electric motor indicates an increased core loss in ac electric motor and consequently a decreased efficiency of ac electric motor and an increased temperature rise of ac electric motor. In case of high frequency ac electric motor, specific magnetic loading must be reduced in order to get lower iron losses in ac electric motor so that reasonable values of efficiency may be maintained in an ac electric motor. The max. temperature rise of an ac electric motor is determined by the type of insulation material used in the ac electric motor. If the cooling co-efficient of the ac electric motor is small, a high value of specific loading may be used in the ac electric motor. The value of cooling co-efficient while designing an ac electric motor depends upon the ventilation conditions in the ac electric motor. An ac electric motor with better ventila- tion has a lower value of cooling co-efficient. If the current density in conductors of an ac electric motor and the slot space factor of ac electric motor are assumed constant, then specific electric loading of an ac electric motor is proportional to the diameter of the core of ac electric motor as depth usually depends upon the diameter of core of ac electric motor. Typical values of current density are in the range of 2 - 5 A/mm sq. in case of an ac electric motor. While desining an ac electric motor, temperature rise is usually 40 deg C for normal applications of ac electric motor and co-efficient is between 0.02 to 0.035 CW-m sq. The larger ac electric motor is intrinsically more efficient. As the size of an ac electric motor increases, better ventilation and cooling conditions have to be provided in the ac electric motor. Iron loss in an ac electric motor increases with increased value of air gap flux density. The value of air gap flux density of an ac electric motor determines the overload capacity of the ac electric motor. A large value of ac in an ac electric motor means that a greater amount of copper is employed in the ac electric motor. This results in higher copper losses in the ac electric motor and large temperature of embedded conductors in ac electric motor. A small value of ac should be taken for high voltage ac electric motor. And also higher value of ac in an ac electric motor, the lower would be the overload capacity of ac electric motor. For a normal design of an ac electric motor the dia of core of ac electric motor be so choosen that the peripheral speed of rotor of ac electric motor does not exceeds about 30 m/s. The three phases of an ac electric motor can be connected in either star or delta. The power factor of ac electric motor with agreater gap length is smaller. The harmonic fields in an ac electric motor are due to: i) windings of ac electric motor, ii) Slotting of ac electric motor, iii) Saturation of air gap of an ac electric motor and iv) Irregularities in the air gap of ac electric motor. The harmonic fields in an ac electric motor are responsible for increase in stray load losses in ac electric motor and increased ac electric motor heating. The choice of rotor slots of an ac electric motor is particularly important in the case of ac squirrel cage electric motors. The Cogging effect can be over come in an ac electric motor by the way that the number of stator slotes of ac electric motor should not be equal to the number of rotor slots of ac electric motor. Better to have 15 to 30 percent more or less rotor slots of ac electric motor than the number of stator slots of ac electric motor. The difference of stator slots of an ac electric motor and rotor slots of an ac electric motor should not be equal to 2p or 5p to avoid synchronous cups in ac electric motor. The difference between the number of stator slots of ac electric motor and rotorslots of ac electric motor should not be equal to 3p for 3 phase ac electric motor in order to avoid magnetic locking in ac electric motor. The difference between the number of stator slots of ac electric motor and rotor slots of ac electric motor should not be equal to 1, 2, (p+/-1) or (p+/-2) to avoid noise and vibrations in ac electric motor. The ac electric motor noise and vibrations, cogging effects in ac electric motor and synchronous cups in ac electric motor can be reduced or even entirely eliminated be skewing either the stator slots of ac electric motor or the rotor of ac electric motor. Also, in order to eliminate the effects of any harmonic in the ac electric motor, the rotor bars of ac electric motor should be skewed through an angle so that the bars lie under alternate harmonic poles of the polarity or in other words, bar must be skewed through two pitches in ac electric motor. A rotor of an ac electric motor with a high resistance has the disadvantage the I sq. R loss is greater in the ac electric motor and therefore its efficiency is lower under running conditions of ac electric motor. A rotor of an ac electric motor designed with a high value of current density results in high starting torque and a lower efficiency for the ac electric motor. The current density of rotor bars of an ac electric motor may be taken between 4 to 7 A/mm sq. The flux density in the rotor core of an ac electric motor is generally equal to the stator core density of ac electric motor. The total losses in an ac electric motor are equal to the sum of total copper losses in ac electric motor, iron losses in ac electric motor, friction losses in ac electric motor and windage losses in ac electric motor. A small value of leakage reactance of ac electric motor means that the power factor of the ac electric motor is good. The high starting torque of ac electric induction motor can be achieved by either using double cage rotor in ac electric motor or deep bar rotor in an ac electric motor. Design of shaft of an ac electric motor. The shaft of an ac electric motor must be strong enough throughout its section to withstand all loads causing residual strain. The diameter of shaft of ac electric motor in the bearings is less than the diameter under the armature of ac electric motor. Plain bearings are used for horizontal shaft ac electric motor and thrust bearings are used for vertical shaft ac electric motor.

OLTC AVR & RTCC Panel
| Onload Tap Changer (OLTC) is used with higher capacity transformers where HT side voltage variation is frequent and a nearly constant LT is required. OLTC is fitted with the transformer itself. Multiple tappings from HV windings are brought to the OLTC chamber and conacted to fixed contacts. Moving contacts rotates with the help of rotating mechanism having a spindle. This spindle can be rotated manually as well as electrically with a motor. Motor is connected in such a way that it can rotate in both the directions so as to rotate the OLTC contacts in clockwise and anticlock-wise direction. Two push buttons are fitted on the LCP (local control panel) to rotate the motor and hence the OLTC contacts in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. This movement of contacts thus controls the output LV voltage of the transformer. So rotating of OLTC contacts with spindle or push buttons in this way is a manuall process. In case this process of rotating the OLTC contacts and hence controlling the LV side voltage is to be done automatically then a RTCC (Remote Tap Changer Controller) is installed with the transformer HT Panel. The RTCC sends signals to LCP and LCP in turn rotates the motor as per the signals received from the the RTCC.
Automatic OLTC Panel consists of a LCP & a RTCC. System uses an AVR (AVR-MA9) to sence the LV voltage and a comparator circuit to compare the sencing voltage with a preset value. Any difference in two sends a corresponding signal to OLTC pane to lower or raise the LV voltage of transoprmer. The OLTC control panel also has the provision to operate two or more transformers in parallel. One transformer is taken as the master and the remaining as the followers so that they follow the master's LV voltage set values. An OLTC control panel panel is fitted with various indications to visually show the various operations being performed by the OLTC as forward and reverse movement of OLTC contacts, upper limit and lower limit indications, fault indications, interlocking indications between manual and automatic mode of the OLTC and many more. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Working of OLTC AVR - MA9 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Automatic Voltage Regulator Relay - AVR-MA9, is a totally microprocessor based relay that controls the arm movement with the help of high torque motor (OLTC and motor are not parts of the AVR supply). It also indicates the line voltage, line current, load on the transformer, apparent and reactive powers, system frequency and power factor. The AVR can be set to "Auto" or "Manual" mode. In "Auto" mode the AVR controls and maintains the transformer LV voltage as per the pre set value automatically. It sences the variations in LV voltage for a pre-set time delay and brings the voltage to normal value by changing the tap position of OLTC with the help of high torque motor. In "Manual" mode the LV voltage can be controlled through low/high push buttons which are fitted along with OLTC - LCP (Local Control Panel). Up and down movement of OLTC motor is indicated with the glow of LEDs fitted on the AVR and on the OLTC - LCP. This AVR can be used with any type of OLTC as it has to control the movement of motor which is connected with the arm that moves the contacts of the OLTC. The LCP is generally fitted near the OLTC or upon the OLTC box while the RTCC is fitted with the HT panel of the transformer. Working of Wireless Remote Data Logger:![]()
The working of remote data logger can easily be explained by spliting it into three parts:
1)- Base Unit i.e., the Remote Data Logger itself,
2)- Local PC Interface i.e.. local computer system to which the data logger is connected,
3)- Remote Web Account i.e., remote computer system for remote access of data logger
This is a shared hosting type remote data logger with 2 nos. of analog inputs and 1 no of digital input. Sharing does not mean any data sharing or revealing any of your data components to a third party, its just to bring the cost of remote data logger and its usage expences to a very minimum. Your data is 100% secure and safe and no other one can view it without entering into your password protected web account.

Installation & Commissioning of Wireless Remote Data Logger:![]()
Our Remote Data Logger comes fully pre-programmed and the user has to do nothing. Just make the connections as explained in the operational manual and start using it. Any maintenance or production engineer/foreman having basic knowledge of electrical systems can easily make the connections of remote data logger with any machine that operates on electricity.
Once the remote data logger is connected & energized, it starts sending signals to PC/Laptop. The various electrical parameters of machine (which is connected to data logger) can be read on the "Local PC Interface" (Local PC Interface can be downloaded free from our website). And if this PC/Laptop is connected to internet, all the acquired parameters are sent to remote server for remote monitoring.
And if the user has activated his/her "Remote Web Account" then all the parameters can be monitored from a remote PC/Laptop. User can also do the switching operations from the remote PC/Laptop. An exceptionally low cost wireless GPRS/GMS based SCADA solution for remote industrial automation.
System Voltage - Wireless Remote Data Logger
Remote Data Logger can be used with LT/HT/EHT electrical systems/machines because you can you can give the input voltage at the input terminals directly (90 - 250 VAC) or through a PT. But the values can be read read as full values as - 433V, 11000V, 22000V, 33000V or 66000V.
In the same way any value of current can be read through data logger using suitable CTs. So you can connect a fractinal horse power to 5000 HP or more capacity electric motor (or any electrical machine) with the data logger. But again the values can be read read as full values as - 0 to 7500 Amps or more.

Remote Access Data Logger:

Our team now-a-days is working on "Remote Access Data Logger", to be used for monitoring and protection of electrical systems.
Data loggers would be installed with different electrical systems/machines to be monitored and connected to a local PC with global remote access and control.
The electrical parameters would be recorded by the data loggers and can be downloaded to a local PC. The PC would have an interface to control and reset various functions of the data logger. The data logger would be connected to a server through a modem for storing data to the server for remote access by the user. Data would be stored to the server at regular intervals. The user can access his/her electrical system/machine in any part of the world through an internet connection on his/her PC/laptop. All the data can be downloaded to the PC/laptop. User can switch on or off the system/machine if he/she finds any abnormality. So using our data loggers one can access his/her electrical systems/machines form any part of the world.
To let you know about the qualilty and type of development work we have undertaken so far, we are mentioning a few of them as under. You can also download demos of these from our demo download page.
